Overlooking London Fields on Hackney’s bustling and trendy Richmond Road, Pophams Bakery is a local institution. This venue is the second in the Pophams family, with the original bakery in Canonbury and a new outpost in Islington too. The all day hotspot is famed for its Instagram famous pastries, charming atmosphere and some of the best pasta in town.
The warehouse style space is modern, spacious and bright whilst being welcoming and cosy at once. Swing by in the mornings and you’ll be greeted by the heavenly smell of fresh ground coffee and just out the oven pastries. The Pophams hand crafted pastries really are as good as everyone says, silence inducingly good in fact. The Cheese and Marmite Swirls are our favourites. But, the Maple Bacon Croissants and Roasted Plum and Blackberry Pastries are delicious too. The Ham & Cheese Croissant has a cult following. It’s impossible to pick just one, we recommended at least two.
The pastries are best enjoyed at one of the communal tables, topped with plenty of fresh greenery, amidst the chatter of the breakfast trade. The decor is contemporary and chic, with handmade furniture, artisan crockery and rustic pottery.
The large and minimalist open kitchen overlooks the space, and is where the magic happens. Watch as the expert pastry chefs delicately craft the croissants, twists and viennoiseries before they’re set aside to mesmerisingly rise. If you’re lucky, bag a seat by the kitchen mid-morning and sample some of the latest creations as the chef requests taste testers.
The bustling hotspot busies up at lunchtime and the menu expands into toasties, tartines and salads. The outside tables are like gold dust on crisp and sunny autumn afternoons. In the evenings, the bright and airy space is transformed into an intimate and candlelit restaurant that serves some of the best pasta in town.
The menu offers just four seasonal pastas every day. Each lovingly prepared with the same level of detail and expertise as their pastries. Menu favourites include the Taleggio Cappelletti with Macerated Grapes and Hazelnuts and the Cappellacci dei Briganti with Isle of Wight Tomatoes and Lovage.
The charming and knowledgeable staff are on hand to recommend a pairing from the carefully curated wine list. The list showcases the very best of small and exciting producers. The Semifreddo with Fresh Peach and Croissant Brittle is the perfect sweet note to finish on.
Hackney certainly isn’t short of fantastic bakeries, restaurants and bars, the neighbourhood has a name for itself as home to the best eateries in the capital. But, Pophams really is a cut above the rest, home to serious wow factor and unrivaled food. A true carb lover’s heaven.
